Spring Training is under way.

Spring Training is now underway. Things look pretty different in Arizona this year for the Brewers, we have three different starting position players starting the year out with Carlos Gomez replacing Mike Cameron, Alcides Escobar replacing JJ Hardy and Casey McGehee taking Bill Hall's old spot. Cameron and Hall are both in Beantown, while JJ is going to be planting roots at Target Field. I'm not really upset with any of the replacements we have in these guys either, it was too bad to see Hardy go, but things got chippy on both sides and he had to go. I'm sure he will thrill Twinkie fans this year and they are glad to see Gomez go. That doesn't mean that Gomez is a complete joke as our starting center fielder. Gomez is a possible gold glover and basically a speedy version of Cam in the field, at the plate it is a different story. Gomez has all the speed in the world but might be dumber than a rock, at least that is what disgruntled Twins fans have said. But really is it that bad? Or are they just pissed he is all they got for Johan Santana. If they would have got Jose Reyes or David Wright and they played well, they would still hold a grudge due to the loss of Santana.  Back to Go Go, he is still very young and reminds me a little of a young Dick Weeks. Both were said to be too fast in their swings. IF they can get him to slow his swing down, much like they did with Weeks, he could be a real threat. He has the possibility of a future power hitting speedster. The guy had potential flat out. And finally Mr. McGehee, who played really well for the majority of the time last year (when he was healthy). Casey didn't play well until last year, and I hope he can put together another solid year. We can't afford for him to have a slump like Soto did for the Cubs last year. McGehee is good at the plate and decent in the field. He is definitly an upgrade from Bill Hall, there is no doubt about that. But is he the future of the position for the team, or are his knees going to give out again? Is he the answer instead of Mat Gamel? I don't know, Mat has his flaws at the position and I've seen Casey make mistakes too. I think Mat has time to learn the position for another year in Nashville or by then maybe Hart or Fielder will be gone and he will transition into either of their places with ease. Mat can bat, but is his glove worth a damn? I hope Randolph can help.

In the next couple of days, I hope to post my thoughts on the pitching staff. Thanks for staying in tune for the changes that have been made to our site. The shirts will still be for sale, and other things will be coming. Thanks to all 17,000 visitors we had in the first year. We also had over 60,000 hits. I don't know what that really means, but it sounds decent. We'll keep this going as long as we have at least one person who thinks it's worth reading.

Being that Milwaukee is a small market team our hands were kind of tied this off season. Alot of fans like to get down on Melvin and say why doesn't he make any big splashes in free agency. We simply can't have our cake and eat it too. The Brewers will never be in the market for guys like John Lackey or Cliff Lee, especially if we want to put a respectable offer on the table for Prince. I think everyone remembers how low our offer was to CC in relation to what he actually got from the Yankees. Melvin needed to make some hard decisions this year with the team's best interest in mind. Freeing up money by letting Cameron and Kendall go needed to be done in order to bolster a pitching staff that was downright horrible last year. Granted injuries didn't help that pitiful ERA but it's something all teams have to be prepared to deal with. Maybe Gomez isn't the answer. This may sound crazy but maybe Jody Gerut or possibly even Jim Edmonds end up stepping in for Gomez if he truly is the detriment at the plate that it sounds like he is. Escobar is going to be just fine in my opinion. From what I have read he is a hard working guy who is proud to have a chance to honor his home country of Venezuela as a starting ML shortstop. Hopefully his combination of heart and talent are enough to propel him to reach his full potential. Finally Zaun can't be any worse than Jason Kendall. Sure Kendall was a gritty guy that pitchers loved to have catch but I think the Brewers can do better. Will Zaun be the next Joe Mauer or Victor Martinez,I think not,but hopefully he is somewhere in the middle. My hope is that with the speed that the 2010 Brewers posses Macha actually puts guys on the move. He had talked about it last year at the beginning of the season but then lead runners started getting thrown out left and right.I'm sure someone on Macha's coaching staff can teach these cats how to steal bases. Perhaps maybe put on a little hit and run with only the top of the order of course. I'm excited for this year to begin. With any luck some of the gambles Melvin made will payoff and we can all taste the post season champagne again in 2010.
